History of Caribbean Stud Poker

The invention of Caribbean stud poker is relatively unknown but it was first played in the 19th century in the Caribbean. Alternatively, it is said to have been invented by David Sklansky in 1982. The version at casinos today is slightly different to the original. In the older version, the dealer has two-hole cards revealed. Whereas, the current version played today there is one-hole card. Also, the earlier iterations of the game didn’t have a progressive jackpot and was called Casino poker. A few years later, a patent for the game was filed in the Caribbean island of Aruba. Its rules were slightly different, creating the beloved Caribbean stud poker game we have today.

Basic Caribbean Stud Poker Rules

Below are some of the basic rules to Caribbean stud poker.

  • The games uses a standard 52 card deck.
  • The aim of the game is to beat the dealer/house and not other players.
  • Once the cards have been dealt, there is no drawing or changing the cards in your hand.
  • At a live dealer game or land-based casino, talking must be kept to a minimum and you can’t discuss your hand.
  • The dealer must have an Ace or King to play. If they don’t, the players win an even amount on their ante.
  • If the dealer has an Ace or King, both the ante and the raise lose.

Basic Strategy of Caribbean Stud Poker

The one tried and true strategy with Caribbean stud poker is to play hands that are higher than the dealer’s hand. Playing hands that are lower reduces your odds of winning. Call if you have an Ace or King, or a card that matches the dealer’s hand. The point of a good Caribbean stud strategy is to lower the house edge, spread risks, play a long game, and win some money.
